Elysse Romero Obituary, Death - 21-Year-Old Remembered for Her Courage, Loving Heart and Strength After Five-Month Medical Battle

The family of 21-year-old Elysse Romero is mourning her heartbreaking death on November 2 at 5:30 p.m., following more than five months of an extraordinary medical battle. Her passing has left her loved ones devastated, especially her father, Luis Romero, who described her as the love of his life.

Elysse faced a series of serious medical complications with remarkable courage after initially being admitted to Morton Hospital in Taunton with severe chest pain and difficulty breathing. She was airlifted to Tufts Medical Center in Boston before being transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment.

Her condition involved severe damage to her lungs caused by her immune system, placing tremendous strain on her heart. After her heart stopped, medical professionals were able to revive her. She was placed on life support and eventually underwent a double-lung transplant in an effort to save her life.

Her recovery was complicated by further medical emergencies. Her right transplanted lung tore and began bleeding, requiring doctors to remove it. Elysse was placed back on ECMO life support, but she survived the procedure and continued her fight with only her left lung.

During the summer and early fall, she began making encouraging progress. Although a tracheostomy prevented her from speaking, she found other ways to communicate with those around her through her eyes, smile, hands and iPad. She also began initiating video calls with friends and family, bringing moments of happiness and hope to those who had been standing beside her.

Those moments reminded her loved ones of her determination and the possibility that she might one day return home.

However, her condition worsened in October. Elysse experienced two seizures, and an MRI revealed posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), a condition involving swelling in the brain that can be associated with transplant medication. She also developed pneumonia and an infection in the area where her right lung had been removed.

On October 28, she underwent emergency surgery and was placed back on ECMO. Despite the continued efforts and her determination to keep fighting, her body eventually could not withstand the complications.

Beyond her medical struggles, Elysse was a young woman with dreams, interests and a loving personality. She enjoyed music, singing, children, spending time with friends and being close to her family. She had recently earned her driver’s license and was saving toward buying a car while making plans for the future.

Her gentle and caring nature made children feel safe and loved. At just 21, she had so much of life ahead of her, making her family’s loss especially difficult.

Elysse’s father, Luis Romero, shared the heartbreaking news with those who had supported the family throughout her medical journey. The fundraiser originally established to help her recover and return home will now assist with bringing her home one final time and providing the final resting place she deserves.

The family has expressed gratitude to everyone who supported Elysse throughout her long fight and is asking people to continue sharing her story. They hope she will be remembered through the things she loved most: music, love and light.

Elysse Romero will be remembered for her courage, gentle spirit and the love she shared with the people around her. Though her life ended far too soon, the memories she created will remain with her family and friends.

Rest in peace, Elysse Romero. You will always be loved and remembered.
